Texas Democratic state Rep. Nicole Collier abruptly left a private call with California Gov. Gavin Newsom and other Democratic leaders this week after being told it was a felony to take part in the call while in the Texas Capitol.

The chaotic moment, which you can watch below, comes as Democrats have grown increasingly hostile over Texas’s controversial redistricting bill that they say would violate federal voting protections.

Collier was on a video call with Newsom, Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin, and other leaders on Tuesday while the Texas House of Representatives was debating a redistricting bill that was backed by former President Donald Trump. Collier said during the call that the map would violate the Voting Rights Act and diminish the power of minority voters in Texas to elect their candidates.

“This bill will prevent Black and brown individuals from selecting the candidates of their choice because they’re cracking and packing these districts,” Collier said.

After speaking for several minutes, Collier suddenly ended the call roughly 30 minutes into the call while Martin was speaking. “Sorry, I have to leave. They said it’s a felony for me to do this,” Collier told the group.

“I’m sorry, apparently I can’t be on the floor or in the bathroom,” Collier said before apparently talking to an unseen person off-camera. “You told me I was only allowed to be here in the bathroom.”

“I can’t be on the floor. I can’t be in the bathroom,” she then told the group back on the call. “No, hang on. Bye everybody. I’ve got to go.” And with that, Collier hung up.

Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., was on the call with Collier and was shocked and angered by her being forced to leave the call. “This is outrageous. And I will say, Rep. Collier in the bathroom, that woman has more dignity than Donald Trump in the Oval Office, all right?” Booker said.

Newsom, who was on the call, shook his head in agreement, and Booker continued. “That is an American leader. What they’re trying to do right there is silence an American leader, silence a Black woman, and that is outrageous, as we’re witnessing right now. I mean, what we just witnessed, them trying to shut her down and saying it’s illegal for her to be in the bathroom and on this call, this is the lengths that they’re going to in Texas,” Booker added.

CALIFORNIA, TEXAS, fight redistricting lines

Booker and Newsom were on the call to unveil a new redistricting map from California’s Democratic Party. The move came as Democrats unveiled a new fight over Congressional maps in Texas.

To try and thwart the controversial Texas Congressional map, California Democrats unveiled a new redistricting map of their own in an effort to try and counteract what they say would be new Republican Congressional seats.

Under the new Texas plan, Republicans could gain as many as five new congressional seats that Democrats say will lock in GOP power in the Lone Star State for the next decade. Newsom and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) are working together to draft new maps in California that will potentially wipe out five Republican seats to try and keep the numbers even with Texas.

On Friday, a new map was released from California that revealed how Democrats plan to change the face of representation on the West Coast to essentially neutralize Republican gains in Texas.

The map fight in Texas came just over a month after dozens of Democratic members of the Texas House fled the state for two weeks in a stunt designed to prevent Republicans from passing the bill. The move drew an immediate rebuke from Gov. Greg Abbott, who signed an executive order arresting the Democrats who left the state and others who would be barred from holding office if they did not return.

Lawmakers who returned to the state Capitol in Austin told NBC News they had been under a new security level with Texas Department of Public Safety officers watching over them. Members said the officers guarded their offices, followed lawmakers throughout the Capitol, or stood outside bathrooms where members previously had privacy.

Sen. Wendy Davis, D-Fort Worth, told the outlet that members were not only having their badges checked by law enforcement but signing “permission slips” in order to leave the Capitol.

Calif. vs. Texas redistricting: Governors reveal competing maps in redistricting fights

Fox News Digital contacted the offices of Booker and Newsom for further comment on the matter, but did not receive immediate responses. Collier’s office also declined to comment further, saying that the Texas House is still in session.

Democrats, meanwhile, have released an angry music video against the Texas measure with San Antonio Democrat Joaquin Castro at the center of the video. “They say that when the chips are down, that’s when you see which way a man runs. I can tell you one thing: They’re going down,” Castro sings in the video. “The Democrats are on the run. Tell me why? Redistricting. Is it fair? Tell me why? Redistricting. Damn right we’ll fight back! Demozicans!”
