Rapper Snoop Dogg has sparked a new controversy after he criticized the representation of LGBTQ+ people in children’s films. He aimed for a new Pixar movie called Lightyear, which was released earlier this year and features a same-sex couple.

Speaking on It’s Giving with Sarah Fontenot podcast last week, Snoop Dogg said he was recently watching Lightyear with his grandson, and didn’t know how to explain its inclusion of a same-sex couple to him. The hip-hop star found the moment so confusing that he nearly left the theater, saying he had no idea how to respond to a question his grandson asked.

“I was at the movies with my grandson to see this animated f—— movie, and my grandson, in the middle of the movie, like, ‘Papa Snoop, how does she have a baby with a woman? She is a woman,” he said on the podcast. “Oh s—, I didn’t come in for this s—. I just came to watch the g—— movie.”

Snoop said he had no idea how to respond to his grandson and told him to “wait a minute and watch the rest of the f—ing movie.” “They just said she had a baby. They are both women. How does she have a baby? S—. The movie ain’t over with,” he continued. “I’m scared to go to the movies. Like y’all throwing me in the middle of s— that I don’t have an answer for.”

Snoop Dogg Explains Moment That Confused Him

The rapper then elaborated on what he found the most jarring about the situation, saying it was how the kids in the theater asked so many questions when they came across scenes like the one he described. “It threw me for a loop,” he said. “These are kids that we have to show that at this age, like, they’re going to ask questions. They are going to ask. I don’t have an answer. And I was just there to go to sleep and watch the movie. That s— woke me up.”

Reaction to Snoop Dogg Comments, Controversy Widens

The rapper’s comments immediately drew a negative response from liberal audiences, especially as Snoop Dogg is set to perform at the Australian Football League’s Grand Final later this year. AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan defended keeping Snoop on the lineup, PinkNews reported, so as of now, the AFL has not signaled that the rapper’s appearance would be canceled.

Lightyear, which was released in June 2022, is a spinoff from the Toy Story film series and is a prequel of sorts, following the “real” Buzz Lightyear. The character from Toy Story is a toy, so this new film goes back to tell the origin story of the animated space adventurer that inspired him.

The movie was already under fire from conservatives for featuring a same-sex kiss, and some in that camp blamed Disney for promoting adult content for children. Disney had initially removed the moment from the film, but later restored it, after Pixar employees and LGBTQ+ advocacy groups spoke up.

Evans, who voices Buzz Lightyear in the animated film, later defended the moment on Reuters Television, saying, “The real truth is those people are idiots. There’s always going to be people who are afraid and unaware and trying to hold on to what was before. But those people die off like dinosaurs. I think the goal is to pay them no mind, march forward, and embrace the growth that makes us human.”

Lightyear received mixed reviews from critics, but many accused it of being a huge financial disappointment for Pixar and Disney. While the company and its corporate parent did not publish official numbers, the film is believed to have grossed only just over $226 million globally. Projections ahead of its release suggested the movie would do at least twice that.
