Spotify Takes Action Against AI-Generated Music
Spotify announced that it has removed more than 50 million tracks created by artificial intelligence from its curated music recommendations in 2026. This move is part of the streaming giant's broader initiative to ensure that AI-generated music does not overshadow content produced by human artists.
Addressing AI 'Slop' and Spam Content
In a statement released on Tuesday, Spotify described the affected tracks as "AI-generated slop and spam" and emphasized their commitment to keeping such content out of user recommendations to protect the overall listening experience. The company has instituted several policy and technical measures targeting the rising prevalence of artificially generated audio on the platform.
User Feedback Key in Identifying Problematic Tracks
Spotify turned to its listeners to address the challenge of distinguishing between human and AI-generated content. The company analyzed several months of user engagement data, focusing on patterns involving tracks that users frequently skipped or ignored. These frequently discarded tracks consistently overlapped with those identified as artificially generated.
Utilizing Metadata and AI Detection Tools
Combining audience feedback with metadata analysis and third-party AI detection tools, Spotify updated its internal recommendation systems. This approach limited the visibility of AI-generated tracks in listeners' recommendations. Despite these steps, Spotify acknowledged the ongoing challenge, noting that as generative AI technology continually evolves, so do the tactics of those seeking to abuse it.
Impact on Artists and Royalties
The proliferation of AI-generated tracks presents significant implications for human artists, especially regarding royalties. Since payouts are based in part on the proportion of streams an artist's music receives, the inclusion of "AI slop" could dilute the earnings for legitimate artists. Morgan Hayduck, CEO of Beatdapp—an AI and fraud detection company serving music distributors and labels—explained that increasing the total number of streams with AI-generated content reduces the percentage received by human creators.
However, Spotify stated that AI tracks rarely qualify for royalties due to the platform's minimum threshold of 1,000 streams, a milestone less commonly reached by non-human music.
Policy Updates and Transparency Measures
Previously, in 2025, Spotify removed 75 million tracks that violated platform rules, including those that replicated existing creators' content or used technology to artificially create media. To further increase transparency, Spotify launched new features in 2026, such as the AI Credits tool, allowing artists to disclose if AI was involved in a track's creative process.
Spotify also introduced the AI Persona badge for artist profiles it identifies as AI-generated. By default, these AI Persona artists are excluded from user recommendations unless a listener actively follows them. As a result, Spotify reported a marked decrease in listener complaints about encountering AI spam in their music recommendations.
The Ongoing Role of Technology and Human Artistry
While AI-detection technology remains imperfect, Spotify aims to stay ahead of those seeking to exploit the platform. The company believes that as AI continues to make music creation more accessible and abundant, listeners will place even greater value on authentic human artistry. "AI moves fast and bad actors adapt just as fast," Spotify commented, reaffirming its commitment to curating a platform that prioritizes genuine creative work.
Verified Artists on Spotify
More than 300,000 artists—representing over 99% of user search activity on the platform—are now verified on Spotify, underscoring the company's focus on supporting recognized and legitimate creators while balancing the complexities introduced by new AI technologies.
