Nvidia, a company whose AI-accelerating GPUs have become a coveted commodity in recent years, is now exploring a novel application for its powerful hardware: integrating AI directly into the gaming experience. Most GeForce RTX card owners use their hardware to achieve immersive gameplay experiences, while Nvidia has launched its experimental G-Assist AI tool, which runs locally to optimize PCs and boost gaming performance. The Nvidia desktop app provides access to an ambitious project that enables users to manage system statistics and adjust settings through an AI assistant accessible with text or voice commands on a floating overlay.

G-Assist requires an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 30, 40, or 50 series GPU with at least 12GB of VRAM for operation. Faster G-Assist performance becomes possible with more powerful graphics cards, as system performance improves with increased GPU power. Future support for laptop GPUs will be included, but their present performance levels could restrict G-Assist’s efficiency.

Running G-Assist locally on the GPU promises future benefits in privacy and reduced latency, but currently poses a major challenge. The AI model interaction triggered a significant increase in GPU usage when tested using an RTX 4070.

Running inference to generate responses creates computational workloads that can disrupt ongoing tasks, especially when gaming. G-Assist processing results in approximately a 20% frame rate reduction while playing Baldur’s Gate 3 at max settings.
